STATEMENT FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
This morning, around 8 AM, two explosions occurred in the departure hall of Zaventem airport. The possibility of an attack is currently being investigated.
Regrettably, these explosions have resulted in loss of life. The priority of the authorities and emergency responders is to provide assistance to the victims and secure the area. The Federal Phase of Emergency Planning has been started.
A call centre has been set up to respond to the questions of relatives and passengers: 1771.
Everyone is asked to stay away from Zaventem airport.
The OCAM has carried out a new analysis of the threat level, following these explosions. The general level for Belgium is set at level 4, specifically for international railway stations, metro stations, nuclear sites and the Port of Antwerp.
A national security council will be convened later on in the day.
The Belgian government would like to express its greatest support to the victims and their families.
A further statement will be issued once more information is available.
