Press Release

Threat assessment: the government remains vigilant and determined.

The National Security Council met on Monday, 9 March. The Council meets once a month and is chaired by Prime Minister Charles Michel.

The Coordination Unit for Threat Assessment (CUTA) has notified its threat assessment to the National Security Council.

The CUTA assesses the threat at level 2 with the need for special vigilance but extends its level 3 assessment for certain specific institutions and locations.

The government is analysing the security measures required by this development with the relevant services. It will adapt these measures accordingly during the course of this week. In the meantime, the current military deployment remains in place.

Prime Minister Charles Michel said: "The government remains very vigilant and determined to ensure the safety of the public."

Jan Jambon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Security and Home Affairs, said: "The current level still requires the utmost vigilance. What matters is to guarantee the safety and security of all the country's citizens and institutions at all times."

As well as the ministers whose portfolios cover justice, national defence, home affairs and foreign affairs, any Deputy Prime Ministers with other responsibilities also sit on the National Security Council. Members of the government who do not sit on the Council may be invited by the Prime Minister to attend its meetings in order to examine issues that concern them specifically.

The Administrator-General of State Security, the head of the General Intelligence and Security Service of the Armed Forces, the General Commissioner of the Federal Police, the Director of the Coordination Unit for Threat Assessment, the Chairman of the Management Committee of FPS Home Affairs, a representative of the Board of Prosecutors General and the federal prosecutor attend meetings of the Council as and when required by the issues on the agenda.
